FOX 29 news reporter Joyce Evans came to GSC on August 28 to talk with Mrs. Alexis Wilson, our 6th grade and middle school math teacher, about the school supplies she received through a national social media movement, #ClearTheList. Watch the story below.
The Nutritional Development Service (NDS) Breakfast and Lunch Program begins on Monday, September 9. The meals are offered to students at no cost. The menus for September are available to view on the "LUNCH PROGRAM" page. Please note that students in grades 1 through 8 will need to bring a lunch to school on Thursday and Friday, September 5-6. Kindergarten students will need to have a packed lunch that Friday, their first full day of school.
Stationery and Summer Reading Lists for all grades (K through 8) are available as .pdf files on one page for easy download. Look under the "Curriculum" or "Parent Resources" menu to link to the page, or just click here.
Our 5th grade students graduated from the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program on Thursday, May 9th, in a ceremony in GSC’s gym that was attended by family and friends. The D.A.R.E. classes this year were under the instruction of Detective Michael Scarpato from the Upper Dublin Township Police Department. Detective Scarpato spoke honestly to the students about the importance of making good choices. As an added requirement of the program, each student composed an essay explaining what they learned in D.A.R.E. The essays, written under the supervision of fifth-grade teacher, Melissa Gregory, included a pledge to make wise decisions regarding drugs, alcohol and tobacco. This year’s winners were Lily Donovan and Joe Fox. Certificates, a D.A.R.E. pin, and bumper sticker were awarded to each student. The evening concluded with a little celebration. Visit our photo gallery for more pictures! Congratulations, 5th Grade! After crowning our Statue of the Blessed Mother and praying the Rosary this morning, Sister Helen distributed the Student of the Month awards for March and April. One student is chosen from every class to receive the Student of the Month Award. Students are chosen by their teacher to be recognized for their daily actions that show they are making a difference in the lives of others.
Congratulations to our Student of the Month Winners! Students from our 5th grade presented - in costume and through re-enactments- all 14 Stations of the Cross. This special Lenten devotion reminds us that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. A special thank you to Mrs. Gregory, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Sharon Carney, and Mr. Urmson for all of their time and hard work. Please join us on Good Friday, April 19th at 7:00pm in Queen of Peace Church to experience the Living Stations.
Mr. Urmson and the GSC Choir showcased their talent before the Philadelphia Flyers took on the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday, February 26th, game at the Wells Fargo Center. What an exciting and memorable way for our students to perform!
Good Shepherd Catholic School (GSC) has added to their STEM initiative with the inclusion of religion and arts to their educational model. STREAM stands for science, technology, religion, engineering, arts, and math education. This approach focuses on real-world applications, creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, and exploration.
“STREAM adds two more areas to a STEM approach to learning. Moving from STEM to STREAM is important for our students,” said Sister Helen Thomas, I.H.M., the Principal of GSC. “The purpose of our school is the religious formation and education of our children. Religion is incorporated in all that we do.” Sister Helen also shared, “GSC has a strong fine arts program. There are many ways to tap into the creativity of our students using this approach. We are preparing our children to be the innovators and leaders of tomorrow.” As part of their focus on the STREAM initiative GSC has added new technology tools and resources available for students. These include:
Students in Ms. Alexis Wilson’s sixth grade combined religion and technology using Ozobots, a pocket-sized robot that teaches programming, to map out the Story of Creation. Students coded a path for their robots which stopped on each day allowing students to guide classmates through the map and explain what happened on each day. Ms. Wilson’s sixth grade class shared, “We learned about the Story of Creation when we were younger. When using the Ozobots we were able to add coding to retell the story and we were able to really understand the love that God had for his plans.” GSC teachers in preschool through eighth grade incorporate STREAM into lessons and special projects throughout the school year. |
